Breast Cancer Outcome Improved by Activity
One of the best things that people with breast cancer can do is to remain active. This is according to a study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (May 2005) of nearly 3,000 nurses who were diagnosed with breast cancer. The study found that moderate levels of activity, such as walking at 2 - 3 miles an hour for a total of 1 to 2 hours a week generated a significant improvement in outcomes compared with people who exercised for less than that. Interestingly, higher levels of activity did not generate better results -- but the researchers pointed out that this may have been due to the more active group having later stage cancers (this data was not available to the study). What is clear is that moderate exercise makes a significant impact on the likelihood of survival of breast cancer. This is an instance of a simple self-help measure that can improve health in the fact of a serious challenge. More recent findings published in the Journal of Oncology in April 2008 and June 2008 found similar results for people with colorectal cancers -- moderate exercise improved outcomes of people with these cancers, and reduced the risk of getting such cancers in the first place.
