Flu Shots and Mortality Reduction By Dr. James Chappell Convention wisdom has held that flu shots are particularly beneficial for the elderly because they confer a reduction in mortality from flu and its complications. However, a study published this year in the American Journal of Respiratory Critical Care Medicine found that flu vaccinations did not improve mortality rates in either “already-well” or “already-ill” people. The authors looked at more patient behavior variables than previous studies – such as pre-existing illnesses and compliance with medication protocols, amount of exercise, smoking, drinking and other wellness risk factors – which they collectively referred to as the “healthy user effect”. When this factor is taken into account, they found no significant effect of flu vaccinations on mortality
