Gymnema Sylvestre Helps People With Diabetes
By Dr. James Chappell
Gymnema Syvestre has been used in India for thousands of years to support sugar metabolism and to treat what has become known as diabetes. As part of a general movement in science that is looking at whole foods - rather than at chemically-isolated extracts of foods - there are now multiple clinical studies that show that the Indians got it right so long ago and that there may be healthy alternatives to the expensive and toxic chemicals currently used to treat diabetes. For instance, Harvard Medical School found “evidence to suggest that Gymnema can lower blood sugar levels in people with Type I and Type II diabetes.” Yale New Haven Health stated "Gymnema Sylvestre will often improve blood sugar control in diabetics” and “Gymnema may decrease the required dose of insulin.” A paper in the November 1999 Journal of Endocrinology stated that "results confirm the stimulatory effects of Gymnema Sylvestre on insulin release (and) indicate that this herb acts by increasing cell permeability.” And the following year, in the journal Ethnopharmacol, (October 1990) it was stated that “Gymnema Sylvestre therapy appears to enhance endogenous insulin, possibly by regeneration and/or revitalization of the residual beta cells in insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus.” There are other whole foods known to improve blood sugar metabolism and there is evidence that suggests they may eliminate the need for medication in mild cases of diabetes, and reduce the amount of medication that is needed in more severe cases. Anyone with blood sugar challenges is well advised to research also the benefits of cinnamon, American ginseng, nopal cactus, bitter melon, fenugreek, and chromium, all of which have been subject to recent scientific study.
