Needs of Breast Cancer Survivors

By Dr. James Chappell

Activity levels and cardiac and respiratory parameters are often used as indicators of quality of life. They can also provide an objective measure of mood.

If patients are more active, there is generally a presumption that their health is improving and, once they are as active as they were prior to the onset of a health challenge, they are thereby judged to have recovered from it.

However, the findings of a study of breast cancer survivors suggests that reliance on this measure may cause the ongoing suffering of breast cancer patients to be overlooked.

The study found that breast cancer survivors were just as active as control subjects who had not had cancer. Yet members of the breast cancer group were significantly less happy than the control subjects and this discrepancy persisted no matter how long it had been since completion of treatment. At the same time, there was no variation in the cardiac or respiratory functions of the two groups.

So although breast cancer survivors look like they are coping well and show no physiological signs of distress, they remain significantly less happy as a result of the disease.

The authors of the study, which was published in Psychosomatic Medicine, September 2008, suggest that the use of complimentary therapies might be required in order to help breast cancer survivors fully recover their health.
