Physical Activity and Colon Cancer Recurrence

By Dr. James Chappell

A recent study of patients who had been diagnosed with stage III colon cancer has shown that physical activity is associated with a significantly reduced risk of death or recurrence of cancer. While it may seem that people who were treated for colon cancer have reduced ability to exercise, a study of such patients found that 1 year after surgery, their physical functioning was reported to be nearly identical to those who had never had cancer.

Physical activity equivalent to walking 6 or more hours per week resulted in a 47% improvement of the risk of recurrence or mortality compared with inactive patients. (Journal of Oncology, June 2008)

This comes after extensive study of the preventative effects of physical activity on colon cancer. Analysis of 19 scientific studies has shown that physically active people have a reduced risk of developing colon cancer – 22% reduced risk for active males, 29% reduced risk for active females.

In other studies, similar benefits of physical activity were found for prevention of breast and prostate cancers.
